Take care, be aware!

Marina: I went for a pedicure yesterday to the ordinary salon at the nearest plaza.Quite busy. Yes, I can do it myself, but I want to relax sometimes. I couldn’t. All I could think of was how unhygienic the whole process was. I still can’t relax, waiting for the symptoms of some infection to appear. It surprises me how many people don't even assume they can get infected during salon treatments.

They have the same footbath for everyone, which is not sanitized between the clients. Many of dangerous infections and bacteria can easily spread in warm damp environment. Anytime you break the integrity of the skin (happens during wax, manicure, pedicure, etc.) the risk of infection increases as well. Even if you don’t get hepatitis B or C or HIV, you have a huge chance of catching toenail fungus. I promised to myself I’ll never ever go to an esthetician I don’t 100% trust!

To reduce the risk of contagion, always make sure your esthetician washes her hands before touching your body and uses hand sanitizer regularly. Most of them do wear gloves.

- While waxing, esthetician has to use brand-new spatula for each swipe to your skin. Double dipping brings bacteria into the wax pot.

- Uses new wax cartridge refill for every client.

- Properly sanitizes footbath and all the tools after each client.

- Uses clean towels, sheets, etc.

- Uses new nail file or buffer for each client.

- Doesn't do anything you suspect to cause an infection. Let your esthetician know whenever you feel uncomfortable.

Dasha:
It is too bad that there is no government body that curates estheticians and hairdressers, making board examination mandatory like any other profession. Basically you dont need a license to become one. Therefore, everyone is welcome to do whatever they learned in other country (or didn't learn), nobody is afraid to loose their license. This is a real problem, since dentists, nurses ect professionals, which do come in contact with blood or mucouse membranes have to have a license, how come estheticians don't? Think about it.

I work with a lot of estheticians across Canada and I can assure you 60% or more do not know how to properly sterilize their equipment and take proper safety and sanitary precautions when dealing with clients. Even simple things like double dipping in the pot with the same spatula while waxing is a common thing! A lot of estheticians assume that since wax is used hot, bacterias get killed due to heat. Its a myth and a lie! Bacterias can survive even in volcano crates!

I am not going to give you a lecture of proper sanitation in the salons, but please be aware of this issue and chose your esthetician wisely.

Take care, be aware!

CND Shellac

Shellac for me is a real breakthrough of XX1 century! It is a 14+ day wear no matter whether you are gardening, partying, swimming...you name it. Shellac is an armor coat that screams "see you in 2 weeks".

CND's Shellac is an original brand name extended-wear nail color.

Day 1
Shellack in Tutti Frutti
Week 1
Week 2
Even Apples don't last as long, had to use lemon)

Before Shellack I had to change my nail polish (literally) everyday. I do have an active lifestyle, and I hate when my nail polish looks scratched or not shiny or chipped, so I had to be very patient and repaint nail polish every 1-2 days. It was really annoying. My nails just won't keep nail polish on them, no matter which brand I use, it does not stay for long. So liters of nail polish remover and tons of cotton pads were wasted.

With Shellac I am the "happiest camper" out there. Top coat gives a mirror-like finish, the drying time is zero, as it is cured with UV light. The application service time is only 30 minutes.

Marina is wearing Shellac in Dark Lava and Shellac in Silver Chrome

It is also easy to remove without doing any damage to you natural nail plate. In fact, your nails will grow fast and long while wearing Shellac.

Come for Shellack, be pragmatic!

My Green Obsession

I officially admit it, I am obsessed with green. When i walk in to a store, guess where I am heading? Area where all green things are concentrated. Whether its clothing, nail polish, food ...whatever, cant miss me, I'll meet you beside green)

Word Green actually comes from old English verb growan, "to grow". In Russian green is Зелёный (green) which comes from the word зелень (greens, as in plants, not money). I like to know where words come from, it always makes sense.

Another interesting fact about green, is that it is used to symbolically represent the fourth primary chakra (Anahata, Sanskrit: अनाहत, Anāhata). It is believed to be the center of force, which inspires the human being to love, be compassionate, altruistic, devoted and to accept the things that happen in a divine way. Anahata is responsible for making decisions following your heart. My Anahata is definitely functioning to its best capacity) And I like it that way.

This is by far not all the green cloth I collected, just an idea. With my red hair, I can never go wrong with green)

As for nail polish, I agree with OPI, Jade is the new black!)

OPI in Jade is the new black, Mermaids Tears, Just Spotted the Lizard (Spiderman 2012), Did it on 'em.
Essie in Pretty edgy, Navigate Her, Turquoise & Caicos
China Glaze in Con-Fused? (Magnetix 2012), I'am with the lifeguard, Entourage, In the Limelight (neon)
Prolana in Lime Overdose

My moisturizer also happens to be green, and not just by looks. It is made in Germany by Rosa Graf. Contains Green Tea Extract, very powerful antioxidant. Cream is light, 24hr hydration, no parabens, chemical emulsifiers or coloring. Absolutely love it!

I am a fan of green tea any season. Someday I'll create a separate post about my obsession with green tea) As for today's post, this is how rainy day looks to me. A large cup of good Chinese tea, a book and look(!) the cover of the book I recently read is also green:))

They See You!

Sunglasses are an important part of my summer outfit. I cant’t go outside without wearing them since my eyes are highly sensitive. I basically can’t see anything in the light.  Moreover, I start screwing up my eyes, wrinkling my forehead, knitting my brows and I end up with all my face muscles so exhausted to keep that very pretty grimace. Not to mention the fact that it’s the shortest way to increase the number of mimic wrinkles. I’m also concerned about protecting my eyes from ultraviolet radiation (I've recently raised this issue).

When it comes to sunglasses, the only thing that matters for me is the brand. I absolutely don’t  trust both no name sunglasses and cheap sunglasses. I even don’t trust some expensive sunglasses as well. Of course my designer sunglasses might not be the perfect choice (I’m not a specialist) but at least  I do my best.

These tips I always keep in mind when I choose my sunglasses:
  • The frame has to be big enough to provide adequate protection.
  • Good sunglasses slightly improve the clarity of vision.  (I'm always surprised with how noticeable the veins in my legs seem. Trying on new sunglasses, I find well-lighted place and start staring at my legs.)
  • They should fit my face and be comfortable.
  • Quality made frame ("Made in Italy". These magic words I crave seeing on any garment label). The way the sides connected to the frame can tell a lot.
Oh..and they shouldn’t be boring )

I don’t have so many sunglasses but I love all of them. And I need them all to wear with different outfits and for different occasions.

Dior Sunglasses

Pucci Sunglasses

Michael Kors Aviator Sunglasses

Moschino Sunglasses

Michael Kors Sunglasses

Due to my passion, my collection grows. I’m planning on buying anything from Tom Ford.  (I’m quite obsessed with everything this guy does.) And I really like cat eye frames as well as coloured sunglasses.

Lagoon City

I have discovered Lagoon city a couple of years back while driving along Simcoe lake looking for a nice, not overcrowded beach. Very neat neighborhood, all houses connected with canals that lead straight to the lake from your very own backyard. It was pleasantly surprising to discover a place like this in Ontario. "Little Venice" I though to myself.

So there we are, just the two of us) sunbathing, walking curved streets of Lagoon City and checking out property listings) I am deep down in my dreams, almost hallucinating (due to heat probably)that one day ill own one of those small, yet cozy houses. I can even picture my boat parked at the canal on my backyard. It is red (don't know why, surprised its not green) and there is a bucket full of ice and champagne!) And the best part, is that I'll be able to sail anywhere in the world straight from my home in Lagoon City. It is definitely time to cool off before my imagination (and unreal heat) will get me too carried away and I'll start thinking of places i would sail to on my little red boat.

So, we get to the water, of course I jump  in my dress..so nice and refreshing) Summer, please don't go away!

Marina: My name is related to water. I love water and I need it. I mean when I look at it I feel like it dissolves and washes away all my negative emotions. The aftertaste of those words you play in your head over and over and then leave unsaid.

I grew up in a condo at the 8th floor, looking at the Gulf of Finland and a pine forest from my windows.  Water reminds me of my childhood, my girlish dreams, so naïve and pure. For how long I don’t have dreams, only plans? Sometimes it seems I can’t afford dreaming. It’s so much easier not to dream at all than to be disappointed…

Oh Gosh! What brought me to this blue mood? Things aren’t so bad!  And I still want to see the ocean someday.

A Gothic Story

I ran into this Catholic School during one of my long neighborhood walks. I thought it’d be great to have a photoshoot there one day. Gothic architecture and picturesque landscape make this a place perfect scenery.

When I hear "catholic", it reminds me of “The Borgias“, my favourite series ever. I got this necklace after I finished with the second season. And I like Jeremy Irons since "Lolita", but  his role as Pope Alexander VI became a culmination of his mature talent.
